Movie Review:

Abhi and Anu fall in love over interactions on Facebook, and get married almost instantly after they meet. Anu becomes pregnant and even as the couple is planning their family life, a revelation shakes up the very foundation of their relationship.

Abhiyum Anuvum begins with Abhi aka Abhimanyu (Tovino Thomas, making his Tamil debut with a slang that reminds one of Mammootty's early Tamil films), a corporate professional in Chennai, echoing a similar line from Mudhalvan - how comfortable it would be if life had a rewind button just like the one on a remote. The film then takes us back to the past to the moment when Abhi is charmed by Anu (Pia Bajpai, who captures the two shades of the characters impressively), a Tamil cinema version of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl who lives in Ooty, after coming across her Facebook videos. Their interactions result in them falling in love with each other. On a whim, they decide to marry instantly, not even waiting for their parents. Abhi's business-first parents (Udhayabanu Maheswaran and Deepa Ramanujam) have always been absent in his life while Amy's mother Meena (Rohini) is away and unreachable. Everything seems to be going fine, at least for these two characters, (for, we never fully buy this romance, which comes across as artificial), and the young couple is over the moon when Anu becomes pregnant. But their happiness is shattered with a revelation, which shakes up the very foundation of their relationship.

The subject that is explored in Abiyum Anuvum is a daring one, with a knot that is complex to untangle. The moral and social dilemmas that the protagonists of the film face need sensitive handling, but that is where the film disappoints. Neither the writing (by Udhayabanu Maheswaran) nor the filmmaking display the delicacy of touch such a subject requires. The revelation involves the birth of Abhi, and while we can understand that the lead characters are too stunned to react initially, they continue to remain in the same passive way for the rest of the film. Abhi is in a turmoil and doesn't want to continue the relationship while Anu still retains the live she had for him. But the staging and direction isn't subtle enough, so all this never comes alive convincingly on screen.

It is finally left to actors like Suhasini and Prabhu, who play Abhi's neighbours, and Rohini, as Anu's mother, to lend some gravity to the film. Suhasini's character, who is a foster mother of sorts to Abhi, initially appears grating, but the actress makes us empathise and appreciate this character in the second half (the scenes where she speaks to Abhi's mother over phone and later with Abhi himself at the hospital give her a chance to showcase her acting chops). The scene involving the older couple's interaction with the younger ones, where they offer guidance to the latter's problem without acknowledging that they are aware of their predicament, is one of the well-written and performed scenes in the film. It is this kind of treatment, even if a little melodramatic, that would have worked out in favour of the film. Sadly that isn't the case for most parts of the film.

Plot:

Abhi and Anu live diametrically different lives, far removed from the space each other occupies. Abhi is the average boy next door with a regular job and a lifestyle that borders on the mundane, and is very close and dependent on his mother. Anu is an organic farmer in Ooty — a lively girl, passionate about social issues and unafraid to challenge social responsibility and the stigma around her. They meet, are instantly attracted to each other and get married on a whim. Subsequently, Anu's pregnancy augurs the start of a new phase in their lives. But it all comes crashing down when their families meet and a shocking disclosure conspired by a strange twist of fate is revealed. This disclosure questions the foundation of Abhi-Anu’s relationship, which they find hard to overcome. Torn between what the society expects him to do and what his love needs to conquer, Abhi is faced with a life altering decision.
