Movie Review:
Balbir Sharma aka baba (Maniesh Paul), discovers on his 25th birthday that his father Charudutt Sharma (Anupam Kher), a timid cashew dealer in Goa, has been moonlighting as a contract killer Charlie, for years! The two soon get tangled in a chain of events that involve a cop, a fraud art dealer and a few bad guys (also bad actors).
Baba too is expected to follow in his father’s footsteps as that’s their ‘real’ family business. Meanwhile, a corrupt Home Minister, is busy hatching a dubious plan.
When you watch an entire supposed comedy with a straight face, there’s a big problem. The action isn’t thrilling, love track is silly, dialogue insipid and a story that makes no sense whatsoever. Nothing and absolutely nothing about this chaotic, multiple character laden story manages to keep you awake, let alone amuse.
Its dated treatment, inconsequential songs and flashback, unimaginative writing, jaded narrative, overdramatic performances and loud background score, which is forcibly played throughout, to evoke some humour, collectively puts you off.
Since neither the story, nor the acting (barring Anupam Kher’s), manage to hold your attention, you end up focusing on things that are relatively more inconsequential. For instance, Kay Kay Menon, who plays an ACP, accidentally grabs a man’s armpit (since he is tied upside down) during an interrogation scene and that is perhaps the funniest scene in the movie, which is purely unintentional humour.
Maniesh Paul gets to play the protagonist-narrator and he takes himself way too seriously by rendering an OTT (over the top) performance. He plays a 25-year-old in the film, looks 35 and acts like he’s 15. He’s a good host but acting is an altogether different beast and requires a certain set of skills. Manjiri Fadnis is pretty yet forgettable.
It pains to see actors as brilliant as Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Kay Kay Menon, being a part of this silly, loud and torturous comedy of errors that you care nothing about, eventually.
Plot:
Baa Baa Black Sheep is the story of Baba (Manish Paul, who is still trying to find his bearings. Baba’s father (Charudutt Sharma) who is a boring Cashew nut dealer for everyone, reveals to a shocked Baba on his 25th birthday that actually they are a family of hit men since the past 12 generations, and now Baba has to takeover as the 13th ! On the other hand, Baba’s love interest Angelina (Manjari Phadnis) runs a Beach Cafe. Her father Brian Morris (Annu Kapoor) is a retired art teacher, but fuels his greed for money and excitement, by selling fakes of an old Renoir painting that his family has inherited. With Baba & Angelina, both keeping their respective secrets, problems start when Kamya (Natasha Suri), an art gallery owner, wants the original Renoir and blackmails the Home Minister for it. Drugs, Contract killings and blackmail account for ACP Shivraj (Kay Kay Menon) entering the scenario trying to find out the connection between all the chaos.
